Honor Code
The Sanford School community is built upon the principles of honesty, trust, and respect. Our interactions and our scholarship rest upon these shared values, which are formalized in our Honor Code. Each student is considered a guardian of the Honor Code, and upholding it contributes to a community ethic that benefits every member. Students’ experiences with the Honor Code teach them that abiding by its principles throughout their lives adds discernible quality to both their future endeavors and their personal integrity.

Lower School
The lower school has an easy-to-remember honor code: respect people and property. This practical code of conduct applies to every situation and interaction a young student experiences. Sanford teaching teams work with students by modeling and reinforcing these universal values, offering guidance and support as the community grows and learns together. -
Middle School
As students grow, they are ready to take on new levels of trust and responsibility. Middle School’s Honor Code grows with them: Students of the Sanford Middle School are truthful in the representation of their work and of themselves and are expected to respect the school, its property, and all members of the community.
Being accountable for one’s actions is integral to the educational process. When children make errors in judgment, they learn from their mistakes and grow as citizens; therefore, violations are typically handled with guidance rather than punishment. As middle school students sign their names to the Honor Code, they internalize the importance and value of a signature as a statement of personal assurance and a pledge to honor their families, who make it possible for them to attend Sanford. -
Upper School
In 2004, the upper school instituted the following Honor Code: The purpose of Sanford’s Upper School Honor Code is to foster trust, respect, and personal integrity throughout the community. As a member of the Sanford Community, I pledge to uphold the ideals of honesty, respect, and personal responsibility in all my endeavors; I expect others to do the same.
The Upper School Honor Council comprises student representatives from each grade level and from the faculty. It takes seriously its responsibilities to ensure that the Honor Code remains a vital and constructive force in the upper school, and to advise the upper school administration regarding significant violations of the Honor Code.
Students who are new to Upper School receive a complete orientation to the Honor Code and to Sanford’s community values so that all students, faculty, and administrators may relate to one another with shared values of trust, responsibility, and respect.
