Exceptional Art Education from Preschool through High School
Sanford School students bring their always-fresh perspectives to an extensive variety of projects and experiences in our well-stocked art studios, immersing themselves in art as viewers, creators, and participants. From drawing and painting to sculpture and photography—and guided by exceptional teachers—our students plumb their innate creativity as they express their unique points of view.
Making connections through art
We continually refresh our Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School curriculum, always incorporating different media, styles, techniques, and processes. Students learn to understand art in a historical and cultural context and make connections between the visual arts and other disciplines, such as the sciences, social studies, math, English, and technology. They explore, discover, solve problems, and make informed decisions, which expand both their creativity and their critical-thinking skills.
As they describe and broaden their personal worlds through their artwork, a wide range of subject matter, symbols, meaningful images, and visual expressions become relevant to them, building their visual literacy skills and self-confidence as they create. Students do all this with impressive, often delightfully unpredictable results.

Yao '24 Awarded for Film "Unpaused"
Last summer in China, Yiheng (Henry) Yao '24 took on an ambitious project by making his first short film, "Unpaused." Diving deep into filmmaking, Henry wasn't just the creative mind behind the script; he also handled casting, directed, shot, and edited the film. By fall, his hard work paid off, bringing "Unpaused" from concept to completion.Read More -
