Samonisky Receives Founder’s Day Award

On Thursday, September 21st, Joan Samonisky was honored with the Founder's Day award during the annual Founder’s Day Celebration.
The presentation of the Founder’s Day Award is a time-honored tradition at Sanford. Its purpose is to honor those members of the Sanford community who have made significant contributions of time and effort to make Sanford the place it is today, continuing the mission of the founders of Sunny Hills. This tradition began in the early 1990s with Sanford’s head of school, Kristi Kerins, who held that position from 1991–1998. It was originally intended as an award to honor Ellen Q. Sawin for all that she did as a founder of Sanford and for how she promoted Mother Sawin’s values and original vision. Today, the annual presentation of the Founder’s Day Award reminds the community of who we are as a school and honors those who have made a big difference in the Sanford community.

This year’s recipient, Joan Samonisky, is entering her 30th year as athletic director at Sanford. For 22 years, Samonisky also held the position of head field hockey coach and led that program with great success. This impressive history at Sanford shows her dedication to the Sanford community. As Sanford Head of School Mark Anderson said, “That 30-year mark for a school leader like Joan is significant. Even more than the sports accolades she leads us to, I think Joan represents Sanford humility. She works tirelessly behind the scenes often without much recognition, and she loves it and does it for the kids and the families and for Sanford. This all speaks to how she is the kind of person that the founders would be proud to see receive this award.”

Congratulations to Joan Samonisky on this milestone in her career and thank you for your dedication to the Sanford community and its founder's mission!
