While the boys' basketball team's recent DIAA state tournament, double-overtime win against the St. Elizabeth's Vikings was a thriller, the game held additional significance for Coach Stan Waterman.
The victory marked Coach Waterman's 500th win during his Sanford career.
Waterman, who is also Sanford's assistant director of athletics and the dean of students, has made an indelible impact on Delaware athletics and the Sanford School community. Head of School Mark Anderson explains:
"What a year for Stan Waterman and the Sanford basketball program. In just one year Sanford won a state championship; the school dedicated our home court in Stan's honor; Stan was named Delaware Coach of the Year and selected to be a USA Basketball high school coach, and now he has earned his 500th victory.
"All of these accolades are a testament to the person, coach, and educator that is Stan Waterman. His long and successful tenure at Sanford make him the undisputed best basketball coach in the state of Delaware. In an age that seems to have forgotten humility and gratitude, Stan is a leader who embodies both. I'm honored to call Stan Waterman a colleague and friend, and I'm grateful to have Stan on our Sanford team."
Sanford Director of Athletics Joan Samonisky agrees with Anderson:
"I think the word 'coach' was created with Stan Waterman in mind. He is the epitome of a kind, caring, humble and dedicated individual who positively transfers his passion for the game of basketball to the lives of the young people he comes in contact with each day. Basketball is merely Stan's tool to help shape and develop his team members into successful adults. He leads with a positive example, treats all others with respect, and holds his student-athletes responsible for their actions, both on and off the court.
"We are so fortunate to have Stan spend his entire head coaching career at Sanford School. Five hundred wins, at one school, is an outstanding accomplishment. Stan is an incredible coach, but he is an even better person! I feel blessed to call him my friend and colleague and am so fortunate to have worked with him each day for the past twenty-five years."
Congratulations to Stan, his team, and the Sanford community.
