Sanford Summer Stories: Special Orientation Welcomes International Students to Campus

An ice cream outing and a round of mini-golf were just a few of the American activities in store for Sanford’s new international students when they arrived in Delaware in August.
Admissions Director Jaime Morgan, Counselor Lauren Ziady, and Upper School English Teacher Brianna Smale developed a two-week program to help the four Chinese students adjust to life in the United States and at Sanford.

New ninth graders Chiian (Jessica) Ip, Sinu (Sarah) Un, and Bei Bei (Beverly) Qin, and eighth grader Jiayi (Linda) Wu, attended mock classes, socio-cultural lessons, campus tours, and meetings with administrators and advisors to give them a better sense of how to navigate life as a Sanford student. They also explored the world beyond Hockessin with several field trips that gave them a chance to meet some of their American peers. Tenth graders Sarah Filak and Leah Somerville joined the group for an outing to the Wilmington Riverfront, where they ate ice cream and played the new 18-hole mini-golf course there. A closing field trip to Winterthur Museum and Garden gave them a chance to learn about Delaware history and interact with an American tour guide.

“We all had a really great experience running this orientation for the first time,” said Lauren. The new students gave great feedback on the program and said they already feel more comfortable on campus.

We welcome our new international students and hope they have a great start to the year!
