Girls and Boys State Participants Attend New Castle “County Day”

Five Upper School students attended “County Day,” an opportunity to learn more about the workings of New Castle County government, in preparation for their upcoming participation in Boys State and Girls State programs.
Eliza Hering, Ryan Mountain, Matthew Rosenthal, Freddy Ryle, and Ana Sarmousakis joined their peers from around the county for a crash course in county government. They met local leaders; toured the county government building on French Street in downtown Wilmington; and participated in a mock county council meeting during which they reviewed real proposed ordinances and discussed local political issues.

Boys State and Girls State, which are programs of the American Legion, bring students together every summer for a week of hands-on experiments in state and local politics and government. Each year, the Legion’s Department of Delaware urges the three county governments to host an event to give participants an up-close look at the local political process.

You can watch a 15-minute video segment about the day created by the New Castle County government, which features students and administrators.

We look forward to hearing more from Sanford’s Boys State and Girls State delegates about their experiences this summer!
