Upper School Students Compete in Science Olympiad

On Saturday, March 7, two teams Upper School teams competed in the high school division of the Delaware Science Olympiad at Delaware State University in Dover.
Ten of the 29 students who participated won medals in their events. Chemistry teacher Donna Farrar and Physics and Mathematics instructor Jamy Moreno helped prepare the two teams for events that ranged from “Air Trajectory” (students designed a device to launch projectiles at a target) to “Wright Stuff” (students constructed rubber-powered monoplanes and competed for maximum time aloft).

From Donna Farrar’s team, Olivia Civiletti and Caroline Cook won a medal for their performance in the “Forensics” event, which required them to identify polymers, solids, fibers, and other materials in a crime scenario.

On Jamy Moreno’s team, Douglas Keir and Selena Ling medaled in “Geologic Mapping,” after demonstrating understanding in “the construction and use of topographic maps, geologic maps, cross sections and their use in forming interpretations regarding subsurface structures and geohazard risks.” Xiaoxi Wang and Philip Charles earned a medal for gathering and processing data to solve challenges in the “Technical Problem Solving” event. Finally, Eliza Hering and Alexandra Somerville earned a medal for their performance in the tricky “Write It/Do It” event, where some students wrote a technical description of a device and others attempted to recreate it based solely on that description.

The 29 students who participated were recognized in Upper School morning meeting. The 2015 Science Olympiad team members were:
