Sanford Students Attend Delaware Governor’s School
This summer, Sanford upper schoolers Ali Rosenthal and Rishi Sreekanth attended the Delaware Governor’s School of Excellence at the University of Delaware with the respective focuses of performing arts (percussional music) and academics.
The Delaware Governor’s School of Excellence offers talented and driven students living in Delaware the opportunity to expand their “academic, artistic, and leadership” skills during the week long program. Throughout this week of development, the students may choose to participate in an academics program or a visual and performing arts program. According to the school’s founding principles, the “academic students will focus on the humanities, business and economics, physical and social sciences, and a variety of cultural experiences. The visual and performing arts students will focus on concentrated practice and study in their chosen discipline.” The students are led by University of Delaware staff members and residential assistants. The whole experience comes at no cost to the participating students thanks to the Office of the Governor which pays for the educational programs, field trips, recreational evening activities, lodging on campus, and food.
The students are chosen through a competitive application process months before the week of training actually begins. The academic program into which Sreekanth was accepted takes in approximately eighty to eighty-five students each year. The music program into which Rosenthal was accepted takes in approximately thirty students per year.
Reflecting on the experience, Rosenthal said, “The Governor’s School was a great experience. My instructor improved not only my technique, but the way I approach drumming, how I listen to music, and he even made me take hearing protection more seriously. I also met some really great people from all over Delaware.”
Congratulations to Ali and Rishi on this terrific accomplishment!
