Sanford Celebrates Class of 2023 at 87th Commencement

Congratulations, Class of 2023! It was a beautiful day to celebrate your accomplishments and journeys at Sanford: a fitting commencement for such a talented group of graduates!

On June 9, 2023, Sanford celebrated its 87th Commencement. The student addresses were provided by Louisabella Wagner and Fadima William.

Staci Krape, a long-time Upper School Science Teacher and Director of Student activities was asked by the Class of 2023 to provide the Commencement Address.

Phoebe Chen played "Memories" by Maroon 5 on piano, and Isabel Asher and Amanda Belej sang "For Good" from Wicked.

During the Head of School, Mark Anderson's speech, we even had a surprise guest, Ted Lasso, who gave our graduates some great advice.

Graduation Awards:

Scholastic Award – Each year, Sanford designates a senior student as top scholar. The Scholastic Award, given in honor of the Class of 1939, recognizes this outstanding student who has excelled academically each year in Upper School while pursuing a challenging and well-rounded program of study. The top scholar should demonstrate an openness to all forms of learning and an investment in Sanford's whole educational experience.

Alumni Award – Presented to the student whose participation in extra-curricular activities has been most dedicated.

Jack Lazarski

Thomas McCarthy Award for Citizenship – Presented in memory of Thomas McCarthy, Class of 1940, and awarded to the student who has always been a responsible and contributing citizen in every aspect of campus life.

Eva Sawdey and Sean Forrest

The Kenneth D. Jones Memorial Award – Given to the senior boy who has shown outstanding qualities of leadership, loyalty, good citizenship, and who in his daily life is always gracious in manner and considerate of others.
Dayon Polk

Nancy C. Sawin Final Award for Girls – Given to the senior who has shown outstanding qualities of leadership, loyalty, good citizenship, and who in her daily life is always gracious in manner and considerate of others.

Audrey Everett

Headmaster’s Award – Recommended by the faculty, and determined by the Headmaster. Given periodically to a graduating senior who merits special consideration at commencement.
