Mendell and Rapine Win DIAA Senior Scholar Athlete Awards
The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Directors recently announced that Kelsey Mendell and Chase Rapine were among six winners of the 2015 Harry Roberts/Senior Scholar Athlete Awards.
A DIAA committee made up of board members and staff evaluated the 18 applications and selected Kelsey as the first place girl’s winner and Chase as the second place winner in the boys’ category. Kelsey’s award comes with a $2000 scholarship, and Chase now has $1500 to use towards college expenses.
“The qualifications of this year’s applicants were exemplary,” said DIAA executive director Kevin Charles in a statement. “The exceptional qualities that all of these young people possess was quite evident. This field of student-athletes is a living tribute to the benefits of participation in extracurricular activities such as interscholastic athletics. All of them exemplify the outstanding job DIAA member schools are doing in providing a well-rounded educational experience for Delaware’s youth.”
The Harry Roberts/Senior Scholar Athlete Awards recognize 12th grade students in Delaware schools whose performance in the classroom is as exemplary as on the field. Kelsey has committed to play field hockey in the fall at Providence College. Chase, who captained this year’s wrestling team, will be headed to the University of Pennsylvania.
The award is named in honor of Dr. Harry Roberts, former Chair of the DIAA Sportsmanship Committee and Superintendent of the Caesar Rodney School District. The scholarships are presented each year in recognition of outstanding students’ “academic, athletic, and leadership accomplishments.”
