2024 Athletic Hall of Fame

During Homecoming 2024, the Sanford School Athletic Hall of Fame honored its latest inductees, celebrating alumni and contributors who have significantly shaped Sanford's athletic history.
The 1994 Varsity Girls Basketball Team made history by becoming the first girls' team in the school’s history to win a state championship. Led by Head Coach David Brooker and Assistant Coach Cathie Brasser, the team set new standards of excellence that have inspired future generations of athletes. Their success was a testament to their hard work both on and off the court.

The team was captained by Tyuanna Booker '94, Monick Foote '94, and Fray Lynch '94, whose leadership and determination were crucial in guiding their teammates to success. The roster included Christine Pruitt '95, Erin Arruda '94, Samantha Van Dzura '95, Mindy Hackett '95, Stacey Adams '97, Arden Miller '96, Courtney Jones '97, Kim Odle '96, Christy Hansen '95, Kristin Wright '95, and Traci Boddy '97. This team’s legacy extends far beyond their championship trophy; they inspired pride in their school, belief in their community, and, most importantly, in one another.

Many team members were also standout athletes in other sports, such as volleyball, soccer, and field hockey, exemplifying the school spirit that "No Talent Lies Latent." Former Sanford Athletic Director Joan Samonisky shared that “their achievements continue to inspire every athlete who wears a Sanford jersey today.”

Chuck Newswanger '84 was inducted into the Sanford School Athletic Hall of Fame for his exceptional achievements in soccer and baseball. Starting at Sanford in 8th grade, Chuck became a standout goalkeeper, earning multiple All-Conference and All-State honors while leading the nation in career shutouts. He also played a crucial role in Sanford's first state tournament appearances.

Beyond Sanford, Chuck excelled at Lynchburg College, achieving numerous accolades. He shared that at Sanford, he learned “how to be kinder and share myself as a teammate and friend.” Chuck believes Sanford was the ideal choice for him, offering a perfect blend of athletic, academic, and personal growth opportunities. The school motto, "No Talent Lies Latent," feels deeply personal to him, as he always felt surrounded by support and mentors who helped him navigate both the highs and lows of his journey.

Eph Humphreys began his career at Sanford in 1982 as an English teacher and eventually advanced to the position of Middle School Head. Eph accepted the challenge of coaching all three sports seasons, bringing the same passion to his coaching as he did to his teaching. Over his 38-year tenure, he coached Varsity Soccer, JV Basketball, and Varsity Lacrosse and was instrumental in reviving the Varsity Lacrosse program in 1984.

Eph's influence was felt not only on the field but also in the lives of his students. His creativity and leadership helped his teams thrive, earning him respect from students, colleagues, and opponents. Eph was celebrated as more than just a coach—he was a mentor and leader known for his ability to inspire young people to reach their fullest potential. Eph Humphreys Field is a tribute to his enduring influence on Sanford athletics, honoring his significant contributions to the school.

Jeff Crowell '74 was a standout multi-sport athlete at Sanford, making a significant impact in soccer, basketball, and baseball. As a senior, he captained all three teams, earning All-Conference honors in soccer and baseball. His high school career was marked by impressive versatility and dedication, highlighted by his roles as a five-year varsity baseball player, a four-year varsity soccer player, and a two-year varsity basketball player. Jeff's leadership and achievements on the field set a high standard for his peers, making him a true role model at Sanford.

After graduating from Sanford, Jeff continued his athletic journey at Lynchburg College, where he played baseball, further showcasing his talent and passion for sports. One of his favorite memories from Sanford includes playing basketball alongside the legendary Walter Davis ‘73 during an unforgettable undefeated season. A strong sense of team spirit, sportsmanship, and leadership characterized Jeff's time at Sanford.
