Spanish Teacher Elizabeth Capone Wins Fellowship From Columbia Teachers College

Sanford Upper School Spanish instructor Elizabeth Capone has been selected for the Klingenstein Summer Institute for Early Career Teachers, a prestigious fellowship administered by Teachers College of Columbia University.
Ms. Capone was chosen from a competitive pool of applications to join a class of 75 fellows. According the Klingenstein Institute, fellows are selected based on their “teaching promise, ability to work collaboratively and leadership potential.”

Teachers with two to five years of full-time teaching experience are eligible for the two-week, fully-funded fellowship, which will be held this summer from June 19th to July 2nd at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. In addition, Ms. Capone will be earning four graduate school credits from Columbia for her participation in the Summer Institute.

Ms. Capone said that Upper School Head Lynn Casto recommended the fellowship to her as an excellent opportunity for young teachers. Along with recommendations from Ms. Casto, French teacher Jane McConnell, and Head of School Mark Anderson, Ms. Capone wrote a personal statement that described the ways her teaching methods have changed over the last four years in response to feedback from students. In particular, she said, she is committed to “engaging students in the classroom while giving them opportunities to be challenged.”

“Education [is] my passion,” Ms. Capone said. “I [am] interested in a lifelong career in teaching and leadership.”
